A float switch with an electronic temperature switch/controller is a combined device that enables both liquid level detection and temperature control within a single unit. It is particularly valuable in applications where monitoring and regulating both the fluid level and temperature in a tank or container are essential.

Operating Principle:

The operating principle of a float switch based on a Reed contact relies on the use of the Reed contact as a switching element. A float switch consists of a buoyant body, also known as a float, which rests on the liquid surface. The buoyant body is equipped with a magnet. When the liquid level changes, the float moves up or down accordingly. Upon reaching a specific fill level, the magnet approaches the Reed contact.

The Reed contact consists of two ferromagnetic contact leaves enclosed in a glass bulb, separated by a small air gap. When the magnet nears the Reed contact, its magnetic field pulls the leaves together, closing the circuit. This completed circuit can then trigger a signal—such as an alarm or the activation of a motor.

The electronic temperature switch/controller monitors the liquid temperature inside the container. A temperature sensor measures the current temperature and converts it into an electrical signal, which is sent to a microcontroller or control unit. The microcontroller processes the signal and compares it with a predefined temperature setpoint. Depending on whether the measured temperature is below, above, or equal to the setpoint, the microcontroller activates or deactivates output components such as heating elements or cooling systems to regulate the temperature.

Advantages:

  • Cost Efficiency: A combined device integrates the functions of two separate units, reducing acquisition costs and saving space.
  • Space Savings: Integrating level measurement and temperature control into one device requires less installation space—ideal for confined environments.
  • Easy Installation: A single device simplifies installation by requiring less wiring and fewer attachments.
  • Holistic Process Control: Combining level measurement and temperature control enables comprehensive monitoring and regulation of critical parameters.
  • Enhanced Process Safety: Simultaneous level and temperature monitoring helps detect and prevent issues like overfilling, dry running, or insufficient cooling.
  • Improved Product Quality: Accurate temperature control ensures consistent product quality, especially in sensitive sectors like food and pharmaceuticals.
  • More Efficient Energy Use: Precise temperature regulation allows for optimized heating and cooling, reducing overall energy consumption.
  • Reduced Downtime: Early detection of problems through dual monitoring minimizes equipment failures and unexpected interruptions.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: One combined device supports a wide range of applications, improving the flexibility of automation systems.
  • User-Friendly: With both functions housed in one unit, operation and maintenance are simplified—only one device needs to be configured and serviced.
